Earthquake Strikes Nepal, Tremors Felt in Delhi-NCR
On October 3, 2023, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, with tremors felt in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The epicenter of the earthquake was about 148 km east of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, India. The quake struck at a depth of 10 km.
According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR for about 15 seconds. People were seen rushing out of their homes and offices in panic. There have been no reports of any casualties or major damage to property.
Earthquakes are common in the Himalayan region, as it is located on a major seismic fault line. However, earthquakes of this magnitude are relatively rare in this area. The last major earthquake to hit the region was in 2015, when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, killing nearly 9,000 people and injuring over 22,000 others.
The NCS has advised people to stay calm and follow safety precautions in the event of an earthquake. These precautions include:
- Dropping, covering, and holding on to a sturdy object.
- Evacuating buildings if tremors are felt.
- Staying away from windows and glass objects.
- Avoiding driving during an earthquake.
The NCS is also monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
